OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival will host special screenings of the upcoming film, Swan Song, including an in-person theatrical screening on Saturday, July 24, at 5 p.m. at Gateway Cinema in Fort Lauderdale.
The film stars movie legend Udo Kier as Pat Pitsenbarger, an aging hairdresser who escapes his nursing home to style a dead woman’s hair (played by Dynasty’s Linda Evans) for her funeral. He embarks on an odyssey across his small town of Sandusky, Ohio, and rediscovers his sparkle along the way. The film also features Jennifer Coolidge as Dee Dee Dale and Michael Urie as Dustin. Tickets for the July 24 screening at Gateway Cinema are available here. Tickets to view Swan Song online from July 25 to August 2 are available here.
Writer-director Todd Stephens grew up in Sandusky and says that Kier’s character in Swan Song is “based on this hairdresser from my home town who was very out and proud long before that was acceptable. He helped give me the courage to be me.”
Stephens cast Urie in the role that is loosely based on himself, while Coolidge plays an old rival of Kier’s character. “Being a small film, our actors had to work for scale,” reveals Stephens on his effort to cast Coolidge. “We got through to her at the very last minute. She read the script and loved it.”
He says he never knew what was going to come out of Coolidge’s mouth. “She’s a genius improviser. Half the things she said in the movie, I didn’t write.”
Magnolia Pictures will release Swan Song to theaters on August 6 and On Demand August 13. Fans can view the film online here from July 25 to August 2, or attend the July 24 screening at Gateway Cinema in Fort Lauderdale.
