The Ellie’s Army Foundation will host its sixth annual Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon on February 25, kicking off at the Aventura Library (2930 NE 199th St.).
Ellie’s Army Foundation was founded in of honor Ellie Levy, who battled cystic fibrosis and had two back-to-back double lung transplants. After Levy’s second transplant, her doctor, Dr. Gustavo, advised her to walk to aid in her recovery. She worked her way up from being able to take 10 steps at a time, to lapping the hospital unit 31 times. Levy faced life’s challenges head-on and strived to do what felt impossible.
The 5K earned its namesake from the medical socks children wear in the hospital. Levy’s doctor wanted to see “dirty socks” after her walks, and she delivered.
The Dirty Socks 5K Run & Walkathon will support the foundation’s mission to provide financial relief and hope to children and young adults battling life-threatening illnesses. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race begins for walkers and runners at 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m., respectively.
Registration is $45 for adults; $20-$25 for students; and free for children aged 10 years and younger. For more information, visit runsignup.com.
