There’s something heavenly about the alluring aromas wafting from inside Sweet Rustic Bake Shop. Warm, flaky, vanilla bean cream-filled cruffins (croissants shaped like muffins) and strawberry-flavored pop tarts dressed in a vanilla glaze with sprinkles are just two of the specialties owner Neida Billings makes in-house. Her passion for baking at home for her children inspired the northern Fort Lauderdale outpost.
Originally from New Jersey, Billings says she always aspired to open a bakery that resembled the ones she grew up visiting in New York. “One of the things I wanted to do was make sure the things I carried in my shop were different,” notes Billings, who gathers recipes from all around, such as her sticky toffee pudding cakes inspired by her travels in England. Baked goods like snickerdoodle cookies and sticky buns often rotate with the seasons, allowing Billings to welcome new creations.
Be sure to stop by Sweet Rustic this month to enjoy the flavors of fall in the form of pumpkin pie bars and pumpkin-flavored scones and muffins. Special-order pies for Thanksgiving, ranging from pumpkin to apple crumb to cranberry pear crumb, are also available for pickup.
