New York designer Kobi Halperin recently unveiled a 13-piece ready-to-wear collection specially designed for Neiman Marcus. Just in time for the holidays, the exclusive line consists of evening and cocktail dresses, and it’s sold at department stores across the country, including at the location in Town Center at Boca Raton.
With almost two decades of experience in the fashion industry, this Israel-born designer shares details on his earliest memories of fashion, his new line and what is to come.
Why did you get into fashion design?
When I was 13 I went with my mother to an atelier where she was getting a dress made. I remember that moment very clearly, because it was the first time I realized that being a designer was a job. I later went on to study fashion design at Shenkar College in Tel Aviv.
What details can you share about the collection?
As a designer that loves details, there are a lot of fabric manipulations, treatments and embroideries done to make these dresses stand out. [In] this collection you will see a lot of heavy lace in solids and neutral/multi; mixed shiny and matte sequins; double-face silk-satin in black, champagne and fuchsia; and crocheted lace with metal beads in an antique finish. A lot of the lace has raw-edge finishing to give the dress a sophisticated, yet undone feel.
What I love about this dress collection is that it can be dressed up or dressed down depending on how it’s styled and the personality of the person wearing it.
Where did you get inspiration from to create this line?
My first time coming to America was when I was 8 years old, and I visited my aunt in Fort Lauderdale, FL. It’s a strong and remarkable memory seeing the open sky, the palm trees, the greenery, all the chic women, and to me, this is America. As a child and to this day, I am very inspired by my aunt. I have memories of sneaking into her closet and watching her get ready—she was someone who really celebrated getting ready for the day.
What makes these pieces ideal for South Florida women?
[T]he collection is all about being effortlessly chic. I think that the most stylish women are those who look effortless and at ease, and I believe that is how the women in Florida like to feel when dressing up for any occasion.
When you’re not designing, where can we find you?
I love to travel, go to museums and galleries, shop in vintage markets, and experience new things. I find a lot of inspiration in my travels, and oftentimes, my trips abroad inspire my collections. Aside from traveling, I love spending time in New York with my two daughters, Mika and Gali.
What’s next for you in the design world?
My vision for Kobi Halperin has always been for the brand to be a lifestyle brand. I am passionate about designing shoes, handbags and accessories, and as we continue to grow, I would love to introduce those categories to my customers. One thing that I haven’t designed yet—but cannot wait to work on—is the design of our first perfume bottle.
