“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Einstein’s words are displayed in large lettering on a wall inside Four Winds Natural in Boca Raton. It’s an inspiring quote, but it’s not until owners Claudia and Ken Rhea share the reason it’s posted that the wheels start spinning.
Modern-day apothecary Four Winds Natural came to fruition after the Rheas had trouble finding natural goods offered in the area. “We lived in London for 20 years, and we just moved [to Florida] last year. We were here desperately looking for places like [Four Hands Natural] that in Europe exist,” Claudia says. “So we said, ‘You know what, I think this is our chance to come and bring this to the people of Boca.’”
The shop carries an array of 100-percent natural products with ingredients clearly labeled—no harsh chemicals, synthetics or artificial coloring. Simply pure. Think skin care and shampoos from Josh Rosebrook, laundry detergents, essential oils, plant-based shakes, soy candles that double as body moisturizers (innovative, right?), baby, makeup and pantry items, yoga wear and more. The artisans behind the small-batch products are based locally and around the world, including London, Switzerland, Australia and Japan.
“There is no concept even similar to this in Florida,” Ken says about the health and beauty shop. “There are either traditional drugstores or there’s Whole Foods, or those kinds of places where you can find similar-ish products, but none have the same criteria that we require of our suppliers.”
The featured goods are dedicated to treating the body inside and out. Customers can browse each section, often staying for hours to smell and test items while becoming educated on each product and its benefits to the body and, ultimately, its greater effect on the world.
Highlights include dry brushes, which help to kick-start the lymphatic system, boost circulation, improve the appearance of cellulite and aid the cells and body to remove waste. There’s a men’s section with high-end shaving supplies like Taylor of Old Bond Street Pure Badger Brushes crafted in the original shop on German Street in London, in addition to contemporary grooming supplies for men and women.
Shop an array of plant-based shakes and the likes from The Super Elixir, The Beauty Chef and Moon Juice. There are Nature’s Sunshine herbal supplements, and, of course, essential oils sourced from Somalia using the purest, most high-grade oil. Four Winds Natural also offers homeopathy, which is similar to essential oils except you digest them. Take a few drops under the tongue or add to water, and reap the natural health benefits for life’s ailments.
And while some may be hesitant to drop their over-the-counter medicine, or might be afraid to move away from their favorite home or beauty product, the Rheas recommend stopping in, learning and giving it a try. “We come from nature. Nature provides everything for us. Nature provides prevention,” Claudia says.
In addition to shopping, Four Winds Natural also offers a spa for guests to receive treatments including acupuncture, massages, facials and even Kundalini yoga classes.
